The Center for Cognitive Science joins Visage Technologies and the University of Rijeka's Faculty of Maritime Studies in Research and Development of a new platform for adaptive learning and training.

Learning outcomes hinge on a trainee's cognitive-affective state as much as on the content or instruction itself. Grounded in affective computing, the platform fuses camera, microphone, and wearable-device physiological signals into real-time estimates of cognitive load, engagement, and arousal, then adapts instructional content and simulation scenarios to match.

First piloted in maritime training simulation, the architecture is built to generalize across learning domains — putting cognitive modeling at the core of the next generation of educational technology.

At this year's i-Days 2025 innovation challenge, CogSci students demonstrated creativity, empathy, and interdisciplinary collaboration across two impressive teams and made us proud!

🥇 1st Place Team Rebecca Milosavljević and Lara Puhovski joined forces with students of medicine and mathematics to design an app that promotes social engagement and cognitive health among older adults. The app offers games and monthly challenges tailored to retirees, supporting memory, orientation, motor skills, and vocabulary—while addressing emotional aspects of aging.

🏅 4th Place Team Luka Valjin competed in a team from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry. Their app, HealthLink, aims to integrate foreign workers into Croatia’s healthcare system through AI-powered translation tools and automatic assignment of general practitioners.

Our students dedicated their last class to presenting their final projects carried out in their Introduction to Anthropology course. They presented the EPlaG - Educational Platform for Genetics project on Monday, January 20, 2025.
The project was developed in collaboration with Genom d.o.o. and Genkonekt, and we were lucky that the director of Genom and head of Genkonekt, Dr. Maja Barbalić, was there to offer insightful conclusions!

About the project:
The aim of the DESCARTES project is to find an answer to the question of whether educational robots can help determine students' cognitive abilities (e.g., attention, perception, memory, spatial orientation, etc.).

We are rooting for our professors, co-heads of our MA in Applied Cognitive Science, Renata Geld and Dario Bojanjac, nominated for the Visionary of the Year for Technology.

Professor Dickey, a noted linguist and Professor at the University of Kansas, will give a lecture as part of the course Language structures and conceptualization with Professor Dickey Zooming in.

Stephen M. Dickey received his PhD in Slavic Linguistics from Indiana University in 1997. He has published widely on Slavic verbal aspect and related verbal categories from a cognitive linguistic perspective.
Most recently he has published an open-access online textbook of Russian aspect for intermediate and advanced students, Russian Aspect in Conversation, with two native-speaker co-authors. He has also translated Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian fiction and poetry, including Meša Selimović’s Death and the Dervish, Borislav Pekić’s How to Quiet a Vampire, and Miljenko Jergović’s Ruta Tannenbaum.

Ova konferencija okupit će više od 200 sudionika iz različitih sektora, uključujući vodeće stručnjake iz područja tehnologije,obrazovnih institucija, poslovanja i upravljanja, kao i predstavnike vladinih institucija i regulatornih tijela.
Centar za kognitivnu znanost dobio je poziv da na događanje pozove i 10 studenata koji su, po riječima organizatora budući pokretači i motori inovacija & naprednih tehnologija.

Prvih 10 studenata (sretnika😊) koji svoj interes iskažu mailom bit će pozvani gosti ovogodišnjeg G.R.I.D. foruma.

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023 Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing presented their graduate programs. We were there too. Many interested students came to our booth and discussed the new MA Program in Applied Cognitive Science.

Our representatives, Renata Geld (FFZG), Alan Jović (FER) and Sanja Kišiček (FFZG) tirelessly answered all students' questions throughout the day and were excited to meet so many enthusiastic students.

We have invited Professor Bipin Indurkhya to share with us all the buzz about cognitive science.

He will be joined by co-leaders of our MA Program in Applied Cognitive Science, Associate Professor Renata Geld and Associate Professor Dario Bojanjac, to answer all your questions about our new Program that starts in the fall of the Academic Year 2023/24.

In a large packed hall at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, we presented our joint graduate program in Applied Cognitive Science in front of hundreds of interested students, the public and academia.

The program will enroll the first cohort of 30 students in the fall of the Academic Year 2023/24 and it was presented by the heads of the MA program - Associate Professor Renata Geld from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Associate Professor Dario Bojanjac from the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, following an opening lecture given by a cognitive scientist and visiting professor Todd Oakley.

The event was attended by over 300 students, undergraduates, graduates, employers, professors and media reps.

September 22-23, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

Students are encouraged to participate in a conference that aims to demonstrate the links between cognitive sciences and infocommunications by discussing topics like:

• Artificial cognitive capabilities
• Human cognitive interfaces & Human-Computer and Bio-Interfaces
• Cognitive sciences in the digital world
• Cognitive networks and their intelligent capabilities
• Digital transformation environment for education
• Cognitive Data Visualization

The new graduate program in Applied Cognitive Science - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb partnered with FER - is based on Standard of occupation and Standard of qualification designed in collaboration with employers✅ and innovation hubs✅.

Our MA in Applied Cognitive Science is officially registered and listed as an accredited graduate program at the University of Zagreb. MA in Applied Cognitive Science is accredited to be taught both in English and Croatian.

Our Program in Applied Cognitive Science boasts a list of over 40 courses and over 30 faculty members from the CogSci hexagon on linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence, philosophy, neuroscience and anthropology, as well as several subdisciplines and interdisciplines.

The applications of cognitive science and career pathways are numerous.
